Avoid Falling Through the Cracks of the Educational System

Low IQ Students (with no Learning Disability/ADD/ADHD diagnosis) who fail to qualify for any kind of help or special services are prime candidates for falling through the cracks. Their IQs are below average, but not low enough to qualify as mentally impaired. These students do not meet the requirements for learning disabilities either because the discrepancy between their ability and achievement is too narrow or even non-existent. Low IQ students are often socially promoted despite a lack of literacy skills and they rarely experience success in school. Many have learned to “mask” their learning disabilities or intellectual deficits by overcompensating with other strengths, such as good behavior (being extra cooperative, quiet and well behaved), participating in many extra-curricular or non- academic activities (such as sports), or even demonstrating other academic proficiencies (such as being able to read at level despite poor comprehension skills).  For a lucky few, sometimes the rules are bent, and they are identified as learning disabled or intellectually deficient so they can receive services of some kind. But the majority, after repeated school failure and several grade retentions, drop out of school whenever they can or end up having a history of frustrating school years.

What can I do as a Parent to avoid my child falling through the cracks?

They key lies in early identification.  If these students are properly tested, identified and placed in effective special education programs that focus on student outcomes, they may receive the services they need to succeed in school and in life.  If you notice your child is struggling repeatedly in school, have him or her tested as soon as possible. Don’t ignore your gut feelings, your child’s complaints, nor give little weight to IQ scores or results obtained on a standardized psychoeducational test.   These tests, together with other information obtained by a trained professional can help make early identification successful.
